Pikemen and Musketeers – Master’s Blog

Pikemen and Musketeers

The Honourable Artillery Company (HAC) is one of those historic and slightly quirky institutions that the City excels in. A regiment, a livery and a club; it has elements of all three. Founded by Henry VIII, its Pikemen and Musketeers provide escorts on formal occasions with their splendid uniforms and formidable weapons. At the Civic Dinner the Lord Mayor was in sparklingly witty form, as ever, and Admiral Lord West roused us from any complacency on the military challenges ahead. The Clerk and I left Armoury Hall to marvel at this green oasis of calm in the middle of the skyscrapers of Moorgate, much like the old Jockey Club in Hong Kong, but that’s another story.

Sheriffs’ and Recorder’s Fund

We Distillers have supported this City charity for many years; it provides support and assistance to ex-offenders who are trying to rebuild their lives after release, and we are all beginning to understand the mental health and practical challenges of survival that it aims to address.

The Mistress was very excited about seeing Damian Lewis on the chat sofa with Helen McCrory when off-duty at a fundraising evening. Would he or would he not be the next Bond? “No, no, how could that be, Daniel Craig is so good”, – so it’s practically certain. It’s funny how people you have been listening to for years on the radio turn out to be nothing like what you expect. Martha Kearney from the World at One turns out to be the epitome of charm and sweet reason as she teases out stories of White House dinners and marital bliss in the Lewis ménage.
